Voyage North - a photo essay: (8) leaving Tasiilaq

The last tender boat returns to the ship:

The bergs that were shrouded by fog on the way in are now clear to see. The tiny speck of a speedboat to the right of the berg gives a sense of size and distance. Information for visitors to Greenland, especially for those planning wilderness hiking, is full of warnings about perception of distance. The exceptionally clear air means that we can see much further than our brains are accustomed to, so we underestimate distances quite substantially. This could be serious if you think you can reach somewhere easily on foot, only to discover that it's a lot further away than you thought.


As we move out of the shelter of the bay towards the open sea, there is an unfolding scene of berg after berg:
