Attempting early morning light

My U3A photo group decided to try an early morning outing to catch the fabled light at that time of day. We had our venue - the edge of a nearby golf course, with undulating ground, trees, countryside vistas, and the rising sun filtering through woods at the boundary of the course. We had a weather forecast that suggested the sun burning through the early morning cloud at about the right time. We met in the car park at 5.45am - a real effort for some of us who are not natural early risers! The Murky cloud persisted, the sun didn't burn through, the light was grey and murky.

So, for the first hour or so I resorted to monochrome - colour wasn't worth even trying.

Later on the light improved a little . . . but not much!

And with deep irony, about half an hour after we gave up and left, the sun did at last burn through the cloud - but in any case it was no longer 'early' light and the sun was quite high in the sky. We then had a warm, sunny day with some haze and cloud starting to gather again in the evening - leading to a camera-worthy sunset behind my house:

We think we won't make another 'early' attempt until the autumn - sunrise is silly-early for the next few months!
