Coombe Abbey (6) - autumn 'colour' turned monochrome

In spite of the trip to Coombe Abbey being all about finding autumn colour, some things look striking in monochrome, especially textures and sharp shadows:

Coombe Abbey (4) - other things to be found

An art installation and fundraiser in support of NHS workers and NHS charities - STANDING WITH GIANTS. From the front, coloured life-sized figures representing all kinds of NHS workers. From the back, blackboards on which messages can be written by the public.

For activity, adventure and excitement - for all ages - a high ropes course:

The hotel is a former stately home with an interesting history, having been drawn into the Gunpowder Plot. Views through ironwork gates create striking graphic images in black and white:

Cambridgeshire Fens (7): trees and plants in monochrome

Sometimes, when the light levels are low and the air is murky - like misty fenland! - monochrome creates the best images.

Cambridgeshire Fens (6): Konik ponies - herd living and family groups

You can see how their manes and tails are full of burrs; no-one gets to groom these animals!

The horses live as they please, but they are used to people being around, as both foot and cycle paths pass through the area, and a National Trust site always has visitors.

While the horses were resting quietly in their family groups, and the ranger took me in among them, the more curious ones approached close ('Be careful they don't try to eat your rucksack', the ranger said, 'they'll chew anything.'). Some wanted their noses rubbed or their ears scratched . . . until suddenly they'd had enough; it was definitely at their invitation, and under their control. Most were more aloof and kept at a distance, though they showed no signs of anxiety, even when I was very close to the foals.

It was the absolute highlight of my trip.

Cambridgeshire Fens (5): Konik ponies - stallions establishing dominance

The ranger told me that the herd is currently about 75 animals, including this year's foals, and that these two stallions work together to take charge . . . but they also compete with each other.
