Nature Table - Spring Equinox

Spring Equinox, half way between the two solstices. This year it falls on 20th March. Spring is underway in the garden - the snowdrops have finished, the crocuses are past their best, some early daffodils have already been deadheaded and the tulips are almost ready to flower. The first edibles are available for picking - small leaves of dark red chard, and new leaves of winter purslane (lower left of image).

I was photographing by an open door to get good light on an overcast day and failed to notice that the breeze had blown the pansies in the top left corner into a heap with the polyanthus!

Equinox is not the same as equilux, because the latter varies with latitude. The equilux is when day and night are equal; except exactly at the equator, it occurs a few days before the spring equinox, and a few days after the autumn equinox. At my latitude it falls on 18th March, so here is Spring Equilux sunset:

Unexpected shadows (2)

Mid-March, but typical April weather - dark sky and a hailstorm, suddenly followed by sun.

And an homage to Vermeer!

Unexpected shadows

A wholly grey and cloudy day was forecast, but the afternoon brought unexpected sunshine.
