Imbolc is one of the cross-quarter days, falling on 1-2 February, half way between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. It's also Groundhog Day in the US! In Britain it seems quite often (though I don't have statistics for this) to provide a little foretaste of spring, just enough to encourage and keeps us going through whatever February might throw at us. It was certainly the case this year - a mild day, lots of sunshine, and in my garden a collection of 'firsts' for the season: first snowdrop, first crocus, first hellebore, first primrose.
