The
Landmark Trust is celebrating its 50th anniversary and has commissioned
sculptor Antony Gormley to create an installation - 'LAND' - consisting of five
sculptures, each placed at, on, or near a Landmark Trust property. Four of the
statues are on the coast, facing out to sea. The fifth is in the centre of
England, gazing into the still water of a canal: the Stratford-upon-Avon canal,
at Lowsonford in Warwickshire, near the property Lengthsman's Cottage. This was built
to house the man - a 'lengthsman' - who maintained the lock as well as the stretch
of canal up to the next lock.
